supporting more than 15000 community, web, and email users.
Administered Linux (CentOS/Redhat, Fedora Core), Solaris, and FreeBSD
servers. Maintained security by keeping software up to date, applying
patches, configuring firewalls, eliminating unneeded services, and
monitoring system logs and changes. Monitored system performance.
Performed system backups and ensured reliability. Provided reports,
technical advice and guidance to management. Communicated directly
with customers regarding changes, maintenance periods, and other
issues. Achievements include:

* Planned and executed transitions from bare-metal systems to
  VMWare-based data center machines and, later, to Amazon's Elastic
  Compute Cloud (EC2).

* Conducted several operating system transitions from Solaris and
  FreeBSD to Fedora Core Linux, and later to CentOS (Redhat) Linux,
  including porting of applications.

* Re-architected billing, registration, and user provisioning systems
  to use Aria Systems software (SaaS) with REST techniques.

* Redesigned and implemented our customer email system, replacing
  an antique command-line and POP system with a modern Web- and
  IMAP-based system, while providing an interim cutover period to
  minimize disruptions to our 3000 email customers.

* Improved system and user security by eliminating unencrypted/insecure
  protocols such as Telnet, FTP, and HTTP to encrypted/secure protocols
  like SSH, SCP/SFTP, and HTTPS.

* Converted a static, inconsistent web site to one that used a
  consistent design with dynamic content that could be maintained
  with the Mason-CM Content Management System.

* Adapted conferencing software for use on mobile devices

software for approximately 7500 users on Dynix and Solaris systems.
Controlled system access by maintaining system logins and passwords,
and monitored system for unusual activities.  Served as technical
liaison between customer support staff and system administrators,
answering questions and providing assistance when possible. Special
projects and events included:

* Designed, developed and maintained customer registration and
  billing data application

* Ported applications software between from Dynix to Solaris.

* Worked with the FBI preparatory to the arrest, trial, and conviction
  of an infamous hacker.
